During a financial crisis, Elon Musk was in a bad place.

SpaceX, his rocket company, had unsuccessful on countless launch
attempts. His other company, Tesla, was using dangerously low
on cash.

Jason Calacanis, a crony of Musk’s from his days using a
renouned internet repository called Silicon Alley Reporter, grabbed
a beef cooking with a morose owner in Hollywood.

He asked him how his businesses were going.

The answer: Not good during all.

Calacanis removed a cooking review with Musk that night
during an talk for
Business Insider’s podcast, “Success! How we Did It”:

“I said, ‘What’s going on with SpaceX?’

“He said, ‘Oh, we usually blew adult a third rocket.’

“I said: ‘Whoa, that sucks … What happens if we blow adult a
fourth?’

“He’s like: ‘Game over, we know. It’s not going to continue.’

“I said: ‘What’s going on with Tesla? Is it loyal we usually have
4 weeks of collateral left?’

“He says, ‘Not true.’

“I said, ‘Oh, great.’

“He said, ‘We have three.’

“I said: ‘Oh s— … What are we going to do?'”

A billionaire friend, whom Calacanis declined to name, wound up
bailing out Musk and Tesla with a loan to cover Musk’s expenses.
Part of a reason a crony was loaning to him was a cold new
automobile Musk’s group was tough during work on: a Tesla Model S.

Musk took out a print of a large, clay indication of a Tesla with
people station around it. He likely he could get a car’s
cost down to about $50,000. Calacanis suspicion a automobile was
“gorgeous.”

After a dinner, Calacanis says he went home and drafted a
hand-written minute to Musk:

Elon, looks like an implausible automobile … I’ll take two!

Best,

Jason

A few years later, Calacanis perceived a note.

“Congratulations,” it read. “Your sequence series is 00001.”

And another: “Congratulations, your sequence series is 00073.”

Musk has pronounced he owns a initial indication of a Tesla Roadster and
a initial Model X. But not a initial Model S.

That belongs to Calacanis. But Calacanis says he would happily
give Musk behind a automobile if he asked.

“If he wants it, he can have it, and he can have it for free, of
course,” Calacanis said. “He’s my friend.”

The newest Tesla Model 3 was denounced final month after hundreds
of thousands of preorders.

Below, listen to Calacanis tell a story of his beef dinner
with Musk that landed him a initial Tesla Model S, or keep
scrolling for a twin detailing how he bought his Teslas.

Here’s a partial of a talk where Calacanis described how he
was means to buy a initial Tesla Model S:

Alyson Shontell: we know that we bought
a initial Tesla, sequence series 00001?

Jason Calacanis: Well, we have No. 16 of the
Roadster and afterwards we have No. 1 of a Signature Series of the
Model S.

Shontell: How did we get a first-ever Tesla?

Calacanis: we was out during cooking with Elon, and
Tesla was going out of business — they had 3 weeks of capital
left, it was a financial crisis, and SpaceX had usually blown up
a second or third rocket.

We were eating a beef together in Hollywood. And we said, “What’s
going on with SpaceX?” He said, “Oh, we usually blew adult a third
rocket.” we said, “Whoa, that sucks.” we said, “What happens if you
blow adult a fourth?” He’s like: “Game over, we know. It’s not
going to continue.” He got that fourth rocket up.

we said: “What’s going on with Tesla? Is it loyal we usually have
4 weeks of collateral left?” He says, “Not true.” we said, “Oh,
great.” He said, “We have three.” we said: “Oh s—.” Like, that
was bad. we said, “What are we going to do?” And he said, “Well,
a crony of ours is giving me a loan to cover my personal
expenses.”

He was disastrous a billion, and a crony of ours fundamentally gave
him a loan. we said, “Elon, there’s got to be some good news.” He
said, “Yeah, don’t tell anybody, though let me uncover we this.” He
takes out his BlackBerry and starts display me a clay version
of a Model 3. It was a full-size clay model, like people
station around it. we said, “That’s beautiful — how most can you
make it for?” He’s like, “Well, it’s going to go 200 miles — I
consider we can make it for $50,000 or $60,000.” And we was like,
“Nice.”

we went home, we wrote dual full checks for $50,000, and we wrote him
a handwritten note: “Elon, looks like an implausible automobile … I’ll
take two! Best, Jason.” Two or 3 years later, we get:
“Congratulations, your sequence series is 00001,” “Congratulations,
your sequence series is 00073.” we have No. 1, though we usually saw Elon
tweeting about a fact that he has No. 1 of a Roadster and No.
1 of a X, though he doesn’t have No. 1 of a Model S, so we told
him he could have it back.

Shontell: You’re going to give it behind to Elon?

Calacanis: Of march I’ll give it behind to Elon.

Shontell: Has he asked for it behind yet?

Calacanis: I’m going to see him subsequent week.

Shontell: Tell him we contend hi.

Calacanis: we will, and if he wants it, he can
have it, and he can have it for free, of course. He’s my friend.
